Hello, I am so excited to be the School Nurse at Muenster ISD this year! I graduated from NCTC in 1997 with an Associate Degree in Nursing. I worked at Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth and Denton Regional Medical Center (Currently Medical City Denton), specializing in Cardiovascular Care. I have also worked in the Chronic Hemodialysis setting. I took a few years off from nursing to raise my kids, and during that time, I returned to school and graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas in Arlington. I am so happy to be returning to my hometown to work and care for the students at MISD! Go Big Red!!! Muenster Hornet Alumni, Class of '94!

Immunizations Required for MISD Students

Each student shall be fully immunized against diphtheria, rubeola (measles), rubella, mumps, tetanus, and poliomyelitis. The Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) may modify or delete any of these immunizations or may require immunizations against additional diseases as a requirement for admission to any elementary or secondary school. EDUCATION CODE 38.001(A), (B)

Students in kindergarten through twelfth grade shall have the following additional vaccines, according to the immunization schedules set forth in TDSHS regulations: pertussis, hepatitis B, hepatitis A (as applicable to the grade levels specified in state rule), and varicella (chickenpox). TDSHS requires students enrolling in seventh through twelfth grades to have one dose of meningococcal vaccine on or after the student's 11th birthday. 25 TAC 97.63

Under Health and Safety Code Chapter 81, Subchapter E, additional vaccinations may be required by TDSHS and/or the local health authority in specific situations under the mechanism of a control order containing control measures.

Medication Permission Policy

If a student needs to take medication at school, certain policies MUST be followed:

ONLY FDA APPROVED MEDICATIONS WILL BE ADMINISTERED AT SCHOOL.
NO HERBAL OR HEALTH FOOD SUPPLEMENTS WILL BE ADMINISTERED.
ALL MEDICATION MUST BE SENT IN THE ORIGINAL CONTAINER.

* If it is a long-term medication (longer than 10 days) then the physician prescribing the medication must sign and fill out the medication permission form along with a parental signature also.

* If the medication is temporary, such as an antibiotic, eye drops, anti-inflammatory, etc., then the medication must be sent in the original container. A medication form must be signed by the parent.

* If the medication is on an "as needed basis" such as headache medication, antihistamine etc. then the form must be filled in and signed by the parent detailing when the medication is to be given...no physician signature is required unless it is a prescription medication. The parent must send the medication to school and it will be kept in the Health Office for use only by the student.

Medication Administration

If your child needs to bring medication to school, these rules must be followed:

Only medication which is required to enable a student to stay in school may be given at school.
All medication is to be in the ORIGINAL CONTAINER. Medication sent in baggies or improperly labeled containers will NOT be given. ONLY FDA APPROVED MEDICATIONS WILL BE ADMINISTERED.
The student is responsible for coming to the health office, or to the designated person in charge of administration, and asking for the medication.
A Medication Permission Form must be on file in the Nurse's office before medication will be given (see drop down menu below for the Medication Permission Form.)
If a prescription medication is to be taken for longer than 10 days, the parent and PHYSICIAN’S SIGNATURE IS REQUIRED.
All medications (including non-prescription) must be kept in the office, except for students whose doctor requires them to carry an inhaler on their person. If a student allows another student or person to use the inhaler, the privilege will be revoked. The physician will need to address on the permission form that the student is capable and responsible for self-administering the medication.

Green Zone: No coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath.
Can do usual activities.

Yellow Zone: One or more of these symptoms: coughing, wheezing, chest tightness,
breathing trouble, waking up at night due to asthma. Or, if you can only do some, but not all, usual activities.

Red Zone: EMERGENCY! Very short of breath, or quick-relief medicines have not
helped, or symptoms are the same or worse after 24 hours in the Yellow Zone. Or, if you cannot do any of your usual activities.

After you take your medicine, call your doctor right away! If you’re still in the Red Zone after 15 minutes and have not reached your doctor, go to the hospital or call 911! If you have these DANGER SIGNS: trouble walking or talking due to shortness of breath or your lips or fingernails are blue, pale, or gray, take puffs of your
quick-relief medicine and GO to the hospital or call 911 NOW! These DANGER SIGNS mean you need help right away. Don’t wait to hear back from your doctor.

New Requirement for School Districts to Provide Bacterial Meningitis Information to Students and Parents

In the 86th Legislature, HB 3884 required DSHS to create procedures for school districts to provide information relating to bacterial meningitis to students and parents. DSHS shall prescribe the form and content of the information. School districts should provide the information below on the district website or provide a link to this page on the district website.

MRSA - Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus -Staph INFECTIONS

MRSA is a drug-resistant form of Staphylococcus aureus infection.

I have gathered a few articles that may help you understand the infection, know ways to prevent exposure, and signs and symptoms to watch for and report to your physician should they occur.
