SECOND GRADE UIL EVENTS
As a second grade student, your child has the opportunity to try out for different UIL events. They are Creative Writing, Music Memory, Chess Puzzle and Storytelling. .
In Creative Writing, the student is given a set of five pictures from which to choose. They have 30 minutes to create a story about one of these pictures. The judging criteria is 70% creativity, 20% organization, and 10% grammar. I am the coach of this event.
I also coach the Storytelling Team. In Storytelling, the student listens to a short story. They must retell it to a pair of judges who have not yet heard the story. They must retell the story using a beginning, middle, and end. Voice inflections and animation are a must.
Bernadette Otto coaches Music Memory. Students listen to classical music and memorize the name of the work and composer. At the competition they are played a short piece of the work and must match it to the composer.
The Chess Puzzle team is coached by Debra Sicking. Students must choose the best move on paper. They learn the chess rules but do not actually play the game of chess for competition.
We would love for your child to try out for several of these events. There will be sign-up sheets in the PreK-2 hallway once school is underway. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
