    SHAC Meeting Minutes

    May 16, 2022

The Muenster ISD SHAC meeting was called to order in the JH bandhall at 4:05 pm on May 16, 2022.

Council members, Muenster ISD staff, and guest speaker present were: Brandi Richardson, Steven Self, Shelley Wylie, Kami Creed, Stevie Maas, Debra Sicking, Holly Bayer, Kristi Schneider (via phone/ Zoom), and Debbie Ewald (ABBA).

Guest Speaker, Debbie Ewald (program coordinator from ABBA), was introduced to the committee by Brandi Richardson. Mrs. Ewald spoke to the SHAC members in regards to the Abstinence Education Program Project that ABBA hopes to offer in the future. They are currently in the planning stages. She spoke on current partnerships with local schools, recent developments, an anticipated launch date of Spring 2023, along with the tasks that still need to be completed and other topics that ABBA desires to include in the upcoming program. A question & answer session was offered after the discussion, in which Mrs. Ewald answered any questions that committee members had. At that time, Mrs. Ewald left the meeting.

SHAC members then discussed which grades should receive human sexuality instruction. It was discussed at that time that grades 5th-12th should receive instruction in a small group setting. The group revisited the possibility of 180 degrees (curriculum) providing sexual risk avoidance services to the school district. No final decisions were made at this time regarding curriculum, but the committee is in agreement that the 5th-12th grade students will receive the required human sexuality instruction in the upcoming school year, more than likely during the fall semester. Final decisions will be made at a later date in order to give a recommendation to the Muenster ISD Board of Trustees regarding this matter.

Mr. Steven Self gave the committee an update on grant money and the use of federal funds within the school district.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:16 pm. The SHAC will meet again over the summer months to make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees in regards to sexual risk avoidance education. Notices will be emailed to all members.
